Visit Franklin County, Visit Patrick County, Visit Floyd, and the West Piedmont Planning District Commission (WPPDC) tourism initiative Life in SOVA are excited to announce the unveiling of “Virginia’s Moonshine Heritage Trail” brand. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 30th at the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum in Ferrum, VA at 1 p.m.

This collaborative effort between distillers, historians, and local tourism offices aims to shed light on the untold stories, dispel myths, and dive deeper into what makes our corner of Virginia special.

The “Virginia’s Moonshine Heritage Trail” brand is an initiative to promote the rich history and cultural significance of moonshine in the region. Visitors will be able to learn about the history of moonshine, and its impact on the region, visit sites of destroyed stills, and enjoy tastings of authentic moonshine from local distillers.

“In Franklin County, moonshine embodies long-standing tradition, a proud legacy, and an opportunity for unique storytelling, intertwining a resilient nature and deep-rooted heritage. The ‘Moonshine Heritage Trail’ unites a region steeped in family traditions, mountain ingenuity, and entrepreneurship,” said Kevin Tosh, Director of Tourism & Marketing for Franklin County. “By linking heritage sites with our current distilleries, we aim to expose a new generation of travelers to a more complete history of spirit distillation in our region. This trail highlights our area’s moonshine, music, and motorsport legacy, introducing visitors to each location’s distinct experiences. Franklin, Floyd, and Patrick Counties will continue to shine in the hearts of everyone that embarks on the Mountain Spirits Trail.”

“Moonshine heritage is more than just history; it’s a living testament to our Appalachian roots and the craftsmanship that defines us. Inspired by this rich legacy, the Virginia Moonshine Heritage Trail beckons adventurers to immerse themselves in our storied tradition,” said Kathleen Legg, Floyd County Tourism Director. “As they journey through our breathtaking landscape, visitors will not only discover the secrets of moonshine’s craft but also experience the warmth of our communities and the authenticity of our local businesses and distilleries.”

“The history of moonshining in Patrick County has always been intriguing, with many stories about this elusive trade. Having known individuals on both sides of the equation, I believe it would be an excellent way to tell those stories that are deeply embedded in the community,” said James Houchins, Tourism Director for Patrick County. “I now work in tourism and have met others with similar experiences, and we feel that this trail will help us talk about those experiences. The independent spirit, family tradition, mountain ingenuity, and the history of survival for some will be part of the trail we can all learn from. This is only the beginning, and together with our neighbors in Floyd and Franklin counties, we hope to expand this initiative to encompass the entire state.”

“We are thrilled to be a part of this initiative,” said Amanda Gray, Tourism and Marketing Specialist for WPPDC. “We hope that the ‘Virginia’s Moonshine Heritage Trail’ will encourage visitors to come and experience the unique history and culture of Southwest and Southern Virginia.”

The Moonshine Heritage Trail received $5,500.00 in the spring of 2023 from the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) Marketing Leverage Program (MLP).   Patrick County partnered with Floyd County and Franklin County to supply $5,500 in matching funds.

The press and public are welcome to attend.
