WPPDC Patrick Broadband Project

WPPDC Patrick Project Description

The WPPDC Patrick County Universal Broadband Project is a project funded through a $1,557,385 grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s (DHCD) Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI) Program with $1,450,145 in match funding from Charter Communications/Spectrum and Patrick County. The purpose of this project is to build fiber to the home (FTTH) broadband service to approximately 690 unserved locations.

Project activities include engineering, 73.6 miles of fiber installation, fiber splicing, installation of electronics to light fibers, and fiber drops to homes, businesses, and community locations that sign up for service.

Current Project Status:

Charter Communications continues to focus on the physical construction of its broadband build within the WPPDC region. The field walkout has been completed, and most of the current work revolves around Network Design, Pole/Permitting, and Fiber Placement. Upon completion of fiber placement, the next phases of Splicing/Testing and Network Activations will begin.

Charter has been working closely with local, state, and federal entities, including VDOT and AEP, to secure necessary permits. While there have been some challenges with AEP permits and additional make-ready work, the project remains on track. Additionally, Charter is actively exploring alternative routes to address potential delays due to Blue Ridge Parkway permitting, with continued collaboration with the National Park Service.

A large portion of the VATI locations, approximately 95%. has been completed, and Charter continues to make progress in the remaining areas.
